When Chaelin (better known to the world as CL) posted a 10-second video teaser on Instagram to mark her unexpected music comeback last month, you bet we broke the replay button. We had to dissect every detail – music aside, the style queen’s ‘fit was at the top of the list. As it has in the past, it led us to the ineffably cool Ding Yun Zhang.
At 25 years old, the Central Saint Martin graduate is ahead of his age in more ways than one. Beyond an impressive resume that lists a tenure at Kanye West’s Yeezy, the young designer made his solo fashion week debut at London Fashion Week in February earlier this year. His design purview, too, looks years ahead into time.
“It’s important that we don’t forget that style sometimes comes from necessity for a sustainable way of living. That is what inspires my desire to design for the future,” explained Zhang in an interview with Dazed Digital. Zhang has big ambitions. Through his collections, he hopes to shed light on the diverse ecosystems that people across the globe live in. His graduate collection, for instance, drew its inspiration from photographer Jackie Nickerson’s portraits capturing workers on corporate plantations in Africa.
Translated into fashion, Zhang’s collection is heavy on utilitarian outerwear. His line-up of puffers are cocoons of respite from the harsh cold. Naturally, sustainability is firmly lodged into the core at his eponymous label. In the future, Zhang has his eyes set on developing his own range of biodegradable nylon and other lightweight waterproof fabrics. His ambitions also extend to granting the underprivileged access to tactile winter wear.
With grand dreams set up for himself, Zhang has his work cut out. But it all has to start somewhere and Zhang is certainly off on the right foot.
