Warning: proceed with caution.

Dermatologists, your go-to facialists, your mom they all would’ve repeated ad nauseam: do not pop your pimples. If you can help it, don’t even touch them. Alas, when there’s an angry red bump staring right back at you when you look into the mirror or when your colleague’s line of vision deviates to the crime scene mid-conversation, something has to be done. Pronto.

Naturally, most of us would resort to popping that bump to instantaneously smooth out the skin. Put your hands up if you’re guilty. It’s just inevitable. Though, we have to acknowledge that there are many other less invasive remedies to deal with seething spots. Especially if you feel those bumps early on, consider adopting these lines of defenses before you get physical.

We’ll lead with the disclaimers. Attacking an already inflamed, angry zit is only going to hurt and hurt the skin further. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. What you can do, however, is damage control to minimise the scarring and soothe the skin after the deed is done. Not forgetting, prepping the skin prior.

Before you decide to pop a pimple, a general rule to abide by is only doing so when it is “ripe”. An obvious visual cue – the whitehead peeking out from beneath the surface of the skin. If you do not see it, wait it out. But when you eventually do and cannot wait for nature to take its course, we suggest you follow these steps meticulously.

1. PREPPING

Take a hot shower. The steam will help to open up your pores for the steps to come. If need the job done in a jiffy, wash your face with hot water or alternatively, place a hot towel over your face.

2. CLEANSE

Both your hands and your face. The last thing you want to do is introduce more bacteria to the pimple. Remember, you’re technically not even supposed to be touching it. If you have long fingernails, trim them prior.

3. EXTRACT

You’re going to want to be as gentle as you possibly can be to avoid bruising your skin and scarring it in the process. Once you’ve wrapped your clean hands around a tissue, softly apply pressure around the pimple zone. You want to evenly distribute the pressure rather than press down on the same two points. Ideally, you’d want to stop before it gets bloody – that means you’ve gone a little too far in. If your pimple were ready to pop, it shouldn’t take very much effort at all to get the pus out.

4. AFTERCARE

We cannot stress how important this part is. At this point, your skin is traumatised by all the pressure you’ve exerted on it. First, you want to cleanse the area again to get rid of whatever bacteria might be left lurking on the skin. We’d follow that up with a spot treatment to further dry out the pimple. If you wish, you could cover the area with a pimple sticker instead. Lastly, don’t forget to moisturise!
