Mod Muses: How to Dress Like our Favorite Style Icons

Mod Muses: How to Dress Like our Favorite Style Icons

At ModCloth, our greatest design inspirations come from some of the greatest women – like Princess Diana and Alicia Silverstone! For our latest collection, we wanted to honor these Mod Muses by showcasing their one-of-a-kind style. With Mod Muse #1, Princess Diana, that inspiration comes in the form of eye-popping prints splashed onto royal silhouettes. For Mod Muse #2, Alicia Silverstone, it’s all about stylish separates in her signature print – plaid! While both of these Mod Muses are ’80s and ’90s icons, we’ve updated theses pieces to look and feel here and now. So whether you want to feel royal in Princess Diana fashion, or all that in a Cher Clueless outfit, our latest collection has you covered.

Prints for a Princess

One of the most adored members of the royal family, Princess Diana of Wales was often referred to as the “People’s Princess” – due to her widespread popularity and global humanitarian efforts. In addition to her amazing activism, her glamorous style also made her an international style icon! Unlike other royals, she was known for pushing style boundaries.

As our design team began planning our new collection, they were inspired by the eye-popping prints and exaggerated silhouettes of the 1980s. And who is more of an ’80s style icon than the much-loved royal! Using a photo of Diana at a polo match, the designers were taken by the bold spotted print and oversize sleeves.

Feeling Royal, What About You?

Inspired by this Princess Diana look, our design team made their own version of the bold black and white spotted print. Splashed onto a shirt dress as well as a button-up top, both are appropriate for any royal engagement. To give your look some modern edge, dress down the top with a pair of jeans. For the shirt dress, pair with colorful accessories to break up the black and white look.

The spotted print isn’t the only place you can find Princess Diana inspiration! Houndstooth is officially the print of the season (just ask Beyonce) and Lady Di was a big fan of the sophisticated print. While the checked pattern mimics plaid, we think the print is in a league all its own. The form-fitting mesh tee can be played up with a pair of wide-leg pants. The chic cape is perfect for wearing over an LBD that’s fit for a queen.

Basic Plaids? As If!

In these Clueless-inspired outfits, you’ll be far from a fashion victim, or ensembly challenged. The endlessly quotable 1995 film is a modern take on Jane Austen’s Emma, following the matchmaking misadventures of Cher Horowitz. Played by Alicia Silverstone, the Beverly Hills high school is as spunky as she is a snob and a half and a total Mod Muse.

The cult classic is also a fashion-favorite to this day, thanks to its outrageous fashion. While the styles of the ’90s were mostly minimalist, the Clueless wardrobe was like, as if! Especially when it came to Cher and her BFF, Dionne’s, matching plaid outfits. While we love their eye-popping plaids, our take on the pattern is a little more pared down, a little less buggin’.

Meet Your Match With These Plaid Prints

Okay, so it’s not a white collarless shirt from Fred Segal. But these two plaid designs are on their way to becoming your most capable looking outfit! Inspired by Cher’s bright yellow plaid skirt and blazer combo, the pattern gets a makeover with a more muted mustard yellow tone. If you want your outfit to avoid becoming a Monet, layer the jumper style with a solid sweater style underneath. The skirt version is like a Noxzema commercial come to life when paired with a graphic tee on top.

If the yellow plaid styles are way harsh for you, go for a more classic look (like 1972-era classic) with this matching suit set. Pair together for a head-to-toe look or separately for a look that’s anything but totally clueless. We vote for pairing the blazer with a sweater for a fall look. Style the pants with a bold style from our new lookbook that’ll make everyone totally pause.
